Lose 10 Pounds In 3 Day: Is It True?

Posted on November 16, 2007 By Joe Fier

measurement.jpgToday I want to show a pretty entertaining diet plan that I found last night. Last night, as my girlfriend was digging around her kitchen cabinets searching for a baking recipe, she came across a seemingly very old suggestion for a diet. She gave it to me to check out and share with the rest of you. The first thing I noticed was that the paper was pretty torn up and it looks like it could have been written on a typewriter. The other thing that caught my eye was that it was recommended from Kaiser Permanente, a very large managed care organization. So this must be all true, right?

This plan is titled: Lose 10 Pounds in 3 Days. I have always been told to steer clear from anything that seems like a quick and easy method to lose weight, it just doesn’t seem right. Since this got me interested, I checked out all of the food items that were included in this diet. Check out the entire thing below:

Day 1

  • Breakfast: 1/2 grapefruit, 2 tbs. peanut butter, 1 slice toast
  • Lunch: 1/2 cup tuna, 1 slice toast, a coffee/tea
  • Dinner: 3 ozs. meat, 1 cup green beans, 1 cup beets, 1 small apple, 1 cup vanilla ice cream

Day 2

  • Breakfast: 1/2 banana, 1 egg, 1 slice toast
  • Lunch: 1 cup cottage cheese, 5 saltine crackers
  • Dinner: 2 hot dogs, 1 cup broccoli, 1/2 cup carrots, 1/2 banana, 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream

Day 3

  • Breakfast: 1 hard boiled egg, 1 slice toast
  • Lunch: 1 oz. cheddar cheese, 5 saltine crackers, 1 small apple
  • Dinner: 1 cup tuna, 1 cup beets, 1 cup cauliflower, 1/2 cantaloupe, 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream

Kaiser says that with this diet, you lose 10 pounds so quickly because this food pattern will cause a chemical breakdown in your system. They say it’s proven to work, so there shouldn’t be any substitutions from anything on the diet plan. They say you can do this plan four times in one month, but not consecutively. Either way, this plan, along with many others out there, just sound really fishy. It just doesn’t seem naturally healthy to lose up to 40 pounds in one month!

I’m going to do a little more research on the topic of “chemical breakdowns” with food in the digestive system. I have never heard of this concept before, but maybe it really is a magical combination that can effectively allow us to lose weight in a quick and healthy manner. Leave any kind of feedback on your guys’ take on this all, any is appreciated!

It sounds crazy to me! The only thing I notice is that you will be consuming very little calories, which will lead to weight loss. It would not be 10 pounds of fat though and it isn’t something you can maintain for a lifestyle.
That doesn’t surprise me that it would come from Kaiser though—I have not had any good experiences with them.

      Interesting find!

    2. Joe Fier on November 19th, 2007 4:31 pm

I agree with you on Kaiser. I have heard much more negative than positive from that company. This was the most off the wall diet I’ve found so far. I’ll be sure to keep my eyes open for any more.

      Thanks for the comment!

    3. Lindsey Hickman on January 11th, 2008 9:53 am

I have done this diet several times. It works very well! I actually lost my recipe, did an internet search, and fonud it again on this website. Its a good “food-detox” for me. I really do loose 10 pounds when I do this diet! I usually only do it once or twice, so I am not sure about the 40 pounds, but I had a friend who did and she lost about 40 pounds over 2 months. I think the more you do it, the less you loose all at once. Say 10 the first, 8 the 2nd, 6 the 3rd. It won’t be 10 evert single time.

    4. Lindsey Hickman on January 11th, 2008 9:55 am

PS: Sorry for the 2nd post, but I forgot. My mother-in-law actually received this from Kaiser many years ago as a part of a blood pressuring lowering effort. And I have always been happy with my Kaiser doctors and plan. Just FYI.

    5. Joe Fier on January 12th, 2008 1:04 pm

Thanks so much for the comment, Lindsey! You are the only person so far that I’ve heard that has tried this diet out. It’s amazing how a combination of food in this way could actually become like a sort of detox. That’s what originally made me skeptical. I’m very glad to hear that it is actually true and works. If you have any other diets like this one, please feel free to tell me!

    6. Leilani on January 27th, 2008 5:08 pm

This diet really works… i don’t really care for cauliflower.. but hey i need to lose as much as i can in 3 months.. haha i’ll be doing this diet once a month and eat healthy and exercise for the rest of the days. My uncle wanted to do this diet buuuut he cannot eat grapefruit.. it conflicts with his medication… would you all know of any substitutions?? tangerine maybe?

    7. juliana on February 20th, 2008 4:57 pm

Hello- I have done this diet before and it truely WORKS! like the other person was saying the more you do it you dont always loose 10lbs! the 1st time i did it I lost 12! I had lost the diet and was looking for it so it lead me here! thanks sooo much im on my mission again!

    8. Jackie on March 6th, 2008 4:10 pm

As a recommendation from friends, I am on my second day of the Kaiser diet. It is easier to follow than many diets because the menu lays out exactly what to eat so it takes the guess work out. And because it’s only 3 days, most people should have the will power to last. I have had some trouble sleeping because I’m hungry. I’ve heard both negative and positive things about the diet. We’ll see how it works…

    9. jessica on March 9th, 2008 8:46 pm

I noticed that on the third day it says to eat 1/2 cantaloupe. Does this mean 1/2 of a cantaloupe or is it 1/2 a cup of cantaloupe?

    10. Sara O. on March 9th, 2008 9:15 pm

Its half a cantelope. cantelopes arent that big after cutting and taking out all the seeds. I did this diet and lost 10 lbs. I decided to do a little more research on it because i heard it only makes u lose water weight. and another girl i gave it to said she lost 10 lbs but gained it back. and she eats healthy. im trying to decide if i want to do have enough will power that long again if its worth it. i will, but i wanna know if its just water weight?

    11. jessica on March 10th, 2008 9:49 am

I don’t think its just water weight. Weigh yourself before you start the diet and again when you are done with it. Yes, you loose the water that you have drinked in those 3 days of dieting but you also loose body weight. Its a detox diet!

    12. renee on March 10th, 2008 10:37 am

I have gone on this diet several times. Each time I loose about 6 lbs. For me 6 lbs in 3 days is great! The last time I went on the diet I lost 11 lbs because I stayed on it for 6 days. The weight will not stay off if you return to overeating. My experience has been that the weight has stayed off and I continue to loose if I transition to another 1200 to 1500 calorie diet for at least another week or two. Otherwise, if I go back to overeating I regain the weight. If I return to a normal healthy diet and exercise I maintain. I love this diet. I also don’t follow the fruit and vegetable requirements strictly. I sometimes substitute the fruits and vegetables that are allowed. good luck!

    13. Stella on March 24th, 2008 1:47 pm

My sisters who are nurses gave me this diet. It does work even when you substitute to similar foods. I ate oranges rather than grapefruits. I also omitted beets and I still managed to lose 6 lbs.

    14. Mayra on April 3rd, 2008 7:55 am

I was looking for this diet as well and that’s how I ended up on this site…My mom was doing this diet a few years ago and she lost over 40 pounds in about 2 months. I agree with those of you that the first you loose the most and the following weeks the wieght lost decreases a bit, but hey it’s still worth it. I have always questioned about the hot dogs, a freind of my mom told her you eat the buns as well, Is that true?

    15. Jenna on April 9th, 2008 2:51 pm

I am currently on day 2 of this diet but it is a bit different.
Here is the way mine reads:

      Day 1
Breakfast: 1/2 grapefruit, 2 tbs. peanut butter, 1 slice toast
Lunch: 1/2 cup tuna, 1 slice toast, a coffee/tea - NO sugar or creamer added

Dinner: 4 ozs. meat, 1 cup green beans, 1 cup beets, 1 small apple, 1 cup vanilla ice cream

      Day 2
Breakfast: 1/2 banana, 1 egg, 1 slice toast
Lunch: 1 cup cottage cheese, 5 saltine crackers
Dinner: 2 hot dogs - NO buns, 1 cup broccoli, 1 cup carrots, 1/2 banana, 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream

      Day 3
Breakfast: 1 hard boiled egg, 1 slice toast
Lunch: 1 slice of cheese, 5 saltine crackers, 1 small apple
Dinner: 1 cup tuna, 1 cup beets, 1 cup cauliflower, 1/2 banana, 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream

My MIL has been on this diet a few times with great results and is the one who passed along the version that I have posted here.

    16. javier on April 12th, 2008 11:42 pm

yeah I just tried this diet a week ago and I lost 8 pounds. I was also looking for substitutes for any of the foods so i can do it again, the first time I did it I could NOT eat the cottage cheese just by itself like that and ended up eating the broccoli and carrots with the crackers. and My sister who is doing the diet with me, did not eat all the tuna, she got full and only ate half a cup of tuna both times. it still worked though :)

    17. Lina on April 14th, 2008 10:22 am

I have done this diet a few times, I have done both sticking exactly to what the diet says, and substituting, and I get about the same results. If you do it for the full three days, take four days off and maintain that for the full month, you have better results. I lost about 15 pounds the first time, and after that it goes down a pound or two, but I also don’t have the ice cream. I received this diet from a trainer, for best results, you should combine it with about an hour of excercise a day, with at least 45 minutes of cardio. DO NOT OVEREAT when the 3 days are over, when you get in better shape increase the cardio time, and once you’ve reached the weight you desire, you can lean your way off the diet!

    18. june on April 16th, 2008 10:40 am

hello, my name is june i tried this diet about 15 years ago but it was by the mayo clinic, yes people it works i lost 50 pounds in a moth and a half. and kept it off a while until i had a baby. i thank god that someone put this on the internet i was looking for this diet for at least 5 years so today i googled it and it had to be the kord because so many came up but i scrolled down and their it was thank you sir you have turned my life around again going to buy my products today lets chat.before i had started messing around with this diet trying to substitute different foods has anyone tried this if so e-mail me people this works please try it dont change anything for the first two weeks believe me you have nothing to lose but weight. i feel that you have given me my life back i looked so many places for this diet. so grateful thank you again

    19. june on April 25th, 2008 10:54 am

i started this diet this week and lost 8 ponds but i also losted inches in the wrong area but hey it works. does any one knows what you can substitue for beet? i hate them but does any body know what food group beets are in whats in them because it has to be same type of vegetable to do the same thing because this is a chemical break down of foods together making this happen and does anyone know how many calories that it contains per day.maybe some food really burns fat and do anyone have a list of them maybe thatys why it works please for give missed spell word typing without reading

    20. Amber on April 30th, 2008 7:48 pm

This diet works if you stick with it? I tried it a few years ago and I have been going crazy trying to find it again. I am going to make sure I post this on the fridge and leave it there!

    21. Rachel on June 9th, 2008 6:57 am

Do you eat the veggies raw or cooked?

    22. Joe Fier on June 9th, 2008 9:54 am

Uncooked would be best. That way all of the nutrient will stay, whereas the cooked veggies would loose a lot of their nutritional value.

    23. Lauren White on July 3rd, 2008 8:19 pm

hi this diet sounds really great and i’m gonna try it but i was just wondering… if you lose the weight and go back to your eating habits will you gain even more?

    24. Tom Kirkland on July 4th, 2008 6:45 am

      hey
wow this diet is amazing i’m on my 2nd day and I can alreday notice a difference and feel lighter. Out of curiosity, during this deit do i only drink water? do you have any other suggestions on what else I can drink?
      thanks a bunch

    25. Dora on July 6th, 2008 1:57 pm

I´m going to try this since I just have to loose the 10 pounds I managed to gain in the last few weeks.
But I was wondering, on day 2 it only says egg for breakfast, is that just raw egg or what? Because on day 3 it says hard boiled egg. I really don´t want to eat a raw egg :S
And the hot dogs, there are like million kinds of hot dogs.. and also the meat on day one, what kind of meat should it be?
      Thank you all!

    26. Krystal on July 7th, 2008 2:23 pm

Hey im just going to try it my cusin suggested it to me and now me and my best friend JoJo are going to try it!!! Im so excited to lose this wait and so is she!!!

    27. Dora on July 10th, 2008 6:30 am

Well.. I did the diet program and I lost 5 pounds.

I would have been happier with 10 but 5 pounds in three days is not bad :)

I hardly ever felt hungry but I got headache.. which I think was mostly because I wasnt´t drinking any coffie!

Thanks again for this diet plan :)

    28. Myra on July 14th, 2008 11:20 am

My mom tried this diet about 5 years ago, she used to work for a doctor’s office who also recomended the diet. She says she lost the Full 10 pounds but gained it back when she began her normal eating habbits. I’m on my first day of the diet and i feel great. I dont plan to go back to my “normal” eating habbits because ofcourse i’ll gain it back! this is a good diet to start a sort of “cleanse” to prepare you for a REAL diet of healthy choices to keep the weight off. i’ll let you know how my diet went on thursday! good luck everyone!

    29. Mel on July 14th, 2008 4:02 pm

I am on my 2nd day, and I feel okay, but honestly I cant see a huge difference yet. What am I doing wrong? I am drinking tons of water, and eating exactly what I am suppose to be eating. Any suggestions?

    30. Myra on July 14th, 2008 4:09 pm

you are doing everything just fine, everyone’s body is different and will react differently to the diet choices you make. now i am not a nutritionist, but my advice would be to not eat in between the 3 meals for now ( not that you are ) and to lighten up on the water consumption. Drink wanter with your meals and have a water bottle JUST ONE in between. water causes bloating if you drink too much. other than that, it doesnt seem to me like your’re doing anything wrong. as long as you stick to the diet and follow it exactly and EXCERSIZE atleast 15 minutes a day, you’ll lose weight.

    31. Mel on July 14th, 2008 4:13 pm

      Thank you,
I just got back from Hawaii and needed to cleanse all the food and alcohol :) out of my body, so that is why I am drinking a lot of water. I will cut back, and no I am not eating anything in between meals. My last day is tomorrow, so we will see. Thanks again.

    32. Myra on July 14th, 2008 4:19 pm

no problem. I’m on my FIRST day but my mother has tried the diet in the past and it worked for her so here I am :) I’m doing this diet to lose both the water weight, and some toxins from my body and this prosess helps produce weight loss. after the diet is completed, it should be followed my your own HEALTHY choices of diet. That is what i am planning to do and i will let you know how it works for me. so far im starving! but once the 3 days are up, its salads and veggies and water galore!

    33. Mel on July 14th, 2008 4:21 pm

I am going to do this through the month…I really only want to lose 10 - 15lbs so we will see how it works for me. So my days are going to be Sunday - Tuesday, with Wednesday through Satruday off. Hope it works. I will let you know. Good luck

    34. Mel on July 15th, 2008 7:41 am

Question? Are there any substutes for beets or cauliflower. I am on my 3rd day and for dinner that is what is on the menu and I am not sure I can bare to eat those. Suggestions? Thanks

    35. Myra on July 15th, 2008 8:07 am

well I didnt eat the cauliflower or the beets i just had brocili and baby carrots instead. I’ve lost 2 pounds so far and my second day on the diet has barely started! and i cheated a little bit cuz my brother bought french fries and still managed to lose 2 pounds, but im guna continue the diet with no cheating and maybe go on for a fourth day of it cuz i ate some french fries.. but yes you can substitute veggies that are similar. cauliflower makes me vomit just by looking at them! ughghg

    36. Mel on July 15th, 2008 8:15 am

Okay so if I go 4 days, do I just repeat the 1st day over?

    37. Myra on July 15th, 2008 8:18 am

I would say yes because that is what I am doing. I’m basically starting over and getting it right this time by not cheating and substituing only similar veggies and also instead of cottage cheese i bought low faw cream chese for the second day. and im exsersizing. we should be fine.

    38. Mel on July 15th, 2008 8:43 am

I am exersizing as well. After the 3 days, do you still lose weight eating a normal, but healthier diet?

    39. Nic on July 15th, 2008 11:43 am

y son’s football coach gave me the diet and I lost 6 pounds the first time I tried it.I didn’t eat the beets. Now I’m on day 2 for my second time around. I didn’t eat healthy after the first time and Suprisingly I kept the weight off.

    40. Mel on July 15th, 2008 2:07 pm

Thank you for the headsd up.

    41. Stacy Tse on July 16th, 2008 6:33 pm

hey i was just wondering… does it matter what day and order you eat the foods in? for example, can you eat day 3 food first and day 1 foods last?

    42. Myra on July 17th, 2008 7:50 am

i think you should do it as it says because its a food “pattern” that caues a chemmical break down in your body that helps you lose the weight. So i’ve read. but i’m on the third day of my diet but on Monday i cheated so i didnt lose a lot yet, i’ve lost 4 pounds so far but i think i will continue the diet until friday and start over after today. has anyone done the diet for more than 4 days?

    43. Dee on July 17th, 2008 5:12 pm

I’m on my second day. I had a huge headache yesterday. I really need coffee. I’ve been checking the scale and I don’t see any results. When can I see results?

    44. Dee on July 18th, 2008 7:57 am

      I need coffee….Any suggestions???

    45. Mel on July 18th, 2008 8:20 am

I actually drank black coffee, a half a cup on the first day. It really helped me, but honestly I didn’t see huge results either and I finished my 3 full days. I was a little disappointed myself. I am going to try once again.

    46. Myra on July 18th, 2008 8:23 am

nobody should be dissapointed. well all tried. Hey I think i was MOST excited, and i ended up losing 4 pounds. NOT 10. AND i havent even noticed where the 4 pounds are that i lost. but its a start. There is another diet similar that is sooo much easier to stick to that i’m doing. Its ALOT more food involved and you can do it as long as you’d like. if anyone would like me to forward them the diet feel free to email me at myraaguirre@templeinland.com

    47. Mel on July 18th, 2008 8:28 am

I think I lost around 3lbs and I kind of cheated a tiny bit on the last day. But oh well. I am going to start up again on Sunday. I would love tohear the other diet similar to this one. Thanks

    48. Myra on July 18th, 2008 8:34 am

go ahead and email me at myraaguirre@templeinland.com MEL and i will be happy for forward it to you. I just dont want to confuse people by putting another diet on here. Thanks. Glad to hear you lost some weight.

    49. Myra on July 18th, 2008 8:39 am

and for you coffee lovers, the diet similar to this one that doesnt promise 10 pounds lost but promises weight loss, it invloves LOTS of coffee consumption. email me if you’d like the 7 day diet plan.

    50. Dee on July 18th, 2008 9:31 am

I’m on my third day. I haven’t seen any changes on the scale but feel like my stomach went down. I FEEL lighter. I will try again next week. Thanks Mel for your tip with drinking black coffee. I cheated a little and added milk. Perhaps this is causing me to not lose any weight. Hmmmm….

    51. Manda on July 22nd, 2008 12:25 pm

Sounds like i great diet, is it healthy?

    52. Britt on August 6th, 2008 10:22 pm

The copy of this diet I have actually states that coffee and tea are OK. It also says that some people drink diet soda to curb their hunger but to drink diet soda at your own risk as it has not been proven harmful or otherwise…

    53. maria on September 9th, 2008 12:54 pm

I am on the first day of this diet but I know about a dozen people here at work that have done it and they have all lost weight and all agree that it really works!

    54. maria on September 10th, 2008 7:49 am

For the second day does any one know for sure if you do or dont eat the bread?

    55. Mary on October 1st, 2008 3:09 pm

Are there any substitutes for tuna?? Does anyone know?

    56. Myra on October 1st, 2008 3:12 pm

i have been getting a lot of emails requesting the alternative recipe so if i have not responded please be patient. i have to look through my files on my new computer here at work. the system crashed and only some files were saved. we’ll see. either way this diet does work wether you use this method, or my method.

      thanks.

    57. Ailene Gonzalez on October 27th, 2008 12:40 am

My mom has been doing this diet for about 3 months now. She has lost over 60 pounds. At first she was losing the 10LBS a week…. maybe like the first two times she did it but every time she does it she loses less and less. It totally makes sense though because the more weight you have on your body the more you have to lose. She doesn’t have all THAT much to lose now so she loses about 2-3 LBS a week. She has adapted it as her lifestyle. She does the diet Tuesday-Thursday and just eats sensibly Friday-Monday. I did it for one week and lost 4 LBS. I’m 22 years old, 5′3 135 LBS (and very muscular) so it does work but I think the 10LBS only applies to those who have a lot of weight to lose. My mom is 61 years old 5′1 and weighed about 230 so of course she lost a lot more at the beginning.

    58. Myra on October 28th, 2008 4:07 pm

well i lost the alternative diet recipe for those of you emailing me about it. But it was not all that different, but keep me posted if you have tried the diet. I tried the diet and lost 6 pounds only to weight the same as i was before after a week off the diet. YOU WILL GAIN THE WEIGHT BACK if you go back to your NORMAL eating habbits. Use this diet as a stepping stone towards healthier eating. I’m no nutritionist, but hell i know whats worked for me and what hasn’t. I recommended reading the book “Skinny Bitch” by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. It gets right to the point and what’s good and what’s not, and it tells it like it is. No B’sing. I gained about 15 lbs since the diet so starting tomorrow i will try the diet again and hopefully with help of my book, i can stick to a regular diet after the 10 pounds or so come off. I’ll keep you all posted. Much love and good luck.

    59. violet on November 6th, 2008 11:54 am

can u take diet supressants to stop the hunger those three days?

    60. TEHONEY on November 16th, 2008 8:45 pm

I’VE BEEN ON THE KAISER DIET FOR 3 MONTHS AND I HAVE LOST A TOTAL OF 25 POUNDS! WHY SO FAST YOU WONDER? “EXERCISE” COMES WITH THE DIET.. NOW THAT I’M OFF THE KAISER DIET, I EAT SMALLER PORTIONS OF MEALS AND STILL “EXERCISE”..

      ALOHA

    61. krzysiek on November 27th, 2008 7:42 am

ive lost 10 lbs in three days just by being sick and not being able to eat :S

    62. Roger on December 3rd, 2008 4:37 am

I have actually done this diet a few times with my ex mother in law and before i did this diet i had very bad eating habits mainly cause i worked at a fast food joint and on top of that i had a slow metabolism but surprisingly the first time i tried it i gave up the 2nd day i was way too hungry but the next 3 times it wasn’t as bad. i used to weigh 250lbs and after doing the diet it sped up my metabolism and shrunk my stomach cause i have a much smaller appetite and 2 years later i’m weighing in at 135lbs
